The microphone is the part of a radio installation the operator handles on every
transmission, and it is usually the first part to fail: cords flex, press-to-talk switches
wear, and capsules take the abuse of a working console. Keeping the manufacturer's own
microphone in service, and a spare on the shelf, avoids the situation where a functioning
radio cannot be transmitted from.
The bracket matters more than it sounds. A microphone with a defined home is one that is
found immediately and is not left hanging by its cord, which is what eventually breaks the
cord at the strain relief. On a helideck or control position where a transmission may be
needed at once, having the microphone in a known place is part of the operation.
