A helideck's lighting is not one circuit. Perimeter lights, floodlights, the TD/PM circle,
the status light, obstruction lights and the windsock all have to be switched, and they are not
all switched together - the perimeter and TD/PM define the landing area, the floodlights are
used selectively because they affect the pilot's night vision, the status light is driven by
conditions rather than by choice. The control system is what organises that into something an
operator can run.
The WEX4 provides six standard groups, plus extra groups for the TD/PM system and the
Q-Status Light System, all of which can be manually switched on and off. Grouping the TD/PM and
status light separately from the standard circuits is the right arrangement, because those two
behave differently: the TD/PM is part of the landing area marking, and the status light is a
warning driven by the installation's condition and its own controller. Q-Aviation note the
status light controller can be built into the WMX series, which removes a separate cabinet and
a separate set of terminations.
The certification is what makes this an offshore product. It is IECEx and ATEX certified for
Zone 1 and Zone 2 hazardous areas, which means the cabinet can be mounted where the helideck
actually is rather than in a safe area with long cable runs out to it. The enclosure is
aluminium coated in RAL7035, cable glands are included and entry is from the bottom, which is
correct for an outdoor cabinet - water finds any top or side entry eventually.
Electrically it takes 100-240 VAC at 50-60 Hz from a C20A circuit breaker, which is worth
noting at design stage because it tells the electrical engineer exactly what to provide. There
is a potential-free relay for signalling out to other systems - a control room panel, a SCADA
point, an alarm system - so the lighting state can be reported rather than only observed. It is
compliant with ICAO Annex 14 and CAP437.
Where an operator wants a graphical interface rather than switches, the WEX5 is the
touchpanel version of the same system: a 15 inch 1024 by 768 XGA explosion-proof touch panel
approved for hazardous classified locations, in a completely sealed IP65 stainless steel
enclosure. The choice between them is genuine. Switches are unambiguous, work in gloves and have
nothing to fail; a touch panel shows the whole deck state at once and integrates the HMS data.
On a deck with an HMS and a repeater light system, the touchpanel usually earns its place.
