Discreet: the dome conceals where the lens is pointing
A dome camera is defined by its enclosure rather than its optics. The camera and lens sit
behind a curved, usually tinted window, and the assembly presents as a smooth dome on a wall
or ceiling. That shape does three useful things at once: it hides which way the lens is
facing, it gives an attacker nothing to grip or knock out of alignment, and it intrudes far
less than a bullet camera on a bracket.
Pelco position their domes for spaces where aesthetics, analytics and reliability are all
in play - which is a fair description of a reception area, a control room or an accommodation
block. The low profile is why: the camera sits close to the ceiling line and reads as part of
the building rather than as equipment bolted to it.
Concealing the direction of view has real deterrent value in public and semi-public areas.
Someone can see the area is covered but cannot tell whether they personally are in frame,
which deters better than a camera whose aim is obvious and therefore easy to work around. It
also means the camera can be re-aimed at commissioning without the change being
advertised.
Pelco's current domes carry AI-enabled detection on the device, so the camera contributes
to alarms rather than only recording. The trade-off worth knowing is optical: light passes
through a curved window, so a dome asks more of the lens than a flat one, and a dirty,
scratched or badly seated dome degrades the image in a way that is easy to miss until someone
reviews footage. Cleaning is part of maintaining a dome installation, and on outdoor domes the
seating of the dome and its gasket is what keeps water out.
